About

Aviation safety reports, made easier to study

NTSB Reports is an independent research and search tool for public aviation accident and incident records. It brings NTSB aviation reports, structured fields, docket files, extracted figures, photos, videos, and update history into one searchable interface.

The goal is practical safety education: make it faster to find relevant investigations, compare similar events, review factual records, and understand the evidence behind probable-cause and preliminary reports.

The investigative work and source records belong to the National Transportation Safety Board and the published investigation record. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NTSB.

The pilot was landing on runway 28 with a crosswind from the south. He reported he used a 10 degree crab correction while on final. The wind was blocked out by some large grain elevators during the first part of the landing roll. After the airplane emerged from behind the elevators, the wind blew it toward the north side of the runway. The airplane slid off the runway and went up on its nose in a farmer's field. The local police department reported the wind was from the south at 25-30 knots all day.

NTSB Probable Cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO DETERMINE THE WIND CONDITIONS BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO LAND IN CONDITIONS WHICH EXCEEDED THE PERFORMANCE CAPABILITY OF THE AIRPLANE.

Full Narrative

On April 23, 1994, at 1200 central daylight time, a Cessna 182P, N1483M, sustained substantial damage when it departed runway 28 during landing roll at the Kahoka Municipal Airport, Kahoka, Missouri. The private pilot and the sole passenger aboard the airplane were not injured. The personal flight originated at the Waverly Municipal Airport, Waverly, Iowa. No flight plan was filed, and visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time. The pilot reported the wind was from the south, and that he had to use a 10 degree wind correction while on final. He stated the landing roll was straight for about 800 feet. After the airplane got out from behind several large grain elevators, the crosswind hit the airplane. The airplane skidded off the north side of the runway. The landing gear sank in the soft dirt of a farmer's field, and the airplane went up on its nose. The local police department reported the wind was from the south at 25-30 knots all day.
