WHILE IN CRUISE FLIGHT AT 11,000 FEET THE AIRPLANE SUFFERED A TOTAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER. A FORCED LANDING WAS MADE IN THE MEDIAN OF A ROADWAY AND THE AIRPLANE ENCOUNTERED AN EMBANKMENT. SUBSEQUENT EXAMINATION OF THE ENGINE FOUND A FAILED PRESSURE FUEL LINE BETWEEN THE FUEL MANIFOLD AND THE NUMBER 5 CYLINDER AT THE SOLDER JOINT WHERE THE 'B' NUT ATTACHED THE LINE TO THE FUEL NOZZLE.

the failure of a pressure fuel line. A factor was the encountering of unsuitable terrain during a forced landing.

Full Narrative

On May 27, 1994, at 1403 central daylight time, a Piper PA-28R- 201T, N3191Q, registered to Kovacs & Tyner Aircraft Holding Corp. of Wilmington, Delaware, lost engine power while cruising at 11,000 feet mean seal level (MSL). While conducting a forced landing on the median of a roadway the airplane sustained substantial damage on impact with an embankment. The pilot and one passenger reported no injuries. The personal 14 CFR Part 91 flight was operating in visual meteorological conditions under provisions of an IFR flight plan. The flight originated at Kansas City, Missouri, at 1305, with the intended destination of Atlanta, Georgia. Subsequent examination of the airplane revealed that the fuel pressure line from the fuel manifold assembly to the number 5 cylinder had separated at the solder joint where the "B" nut attaches to the fuel nozzle at the number 5 cylinder.
