Aviation safety reports, made easier to study

NTSB Reports is an independent research and search tool for public aviation accident and incident records. It brings NTSB aviation reports, structured fields, docket files, extracted figures, photos, videos, and update history into one searchable interface.

The goal is practical safety education: make it faster to find relevant investigations, compare similar events, review factual records, and understand the evidence behind probable-cause and preliminary reports.

The investigative work and source records belong to the National Transportation Safety Board and the published investigation record. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NTSB.

NTSB Probable Cause

the private pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll. Related factors are the rough/uneven terrain, and excessive brake application.

Full Narrative

On June 11, 1994, at 0925 central daylight time, an Aeronca 7AC, N83019, piloted by the registered owner/private pilot, sustained substantial damage while landing on a private grass strip near Clear Lake, Minnesota. The airplane veered off the left side of the grass strip and collided with a tree. The pilot and the two passengers on board the airplane reported no injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the local pleasure flight, no flight plan was filed. The flight operated under 14 CFR Part 91, and originated from Clear Lake, Minnesota, exact time unknown. The pilot reported he had taken his grandchildren for a local pleasure flight. He stated when they returned to the private strip, he "...landed a little longer than usual, maybe a little fast...I was tapping the brakes to stop...the airplane hit a hump near the end of the runway and I inadvertently jammed the left brake. The airplane just veered straight into the tree." The pilot stated there was no mechanical malfunction.
