About

Aviation safety reports, made easier to study

NTSB Reports is an independent research and search tool for public aviation accident and incident records. It brings NTSB aviation reports, structured fields, docket files, extracted figures, photos, videos, and update history into one searchable interface.

The goal is practical safety education: make it faster to find relevant investigations, compare similar events, review factual records, and understand the evidence behind probable-cause and preliminary reports.

The investigative work and source records belong to the National Transportation Safety Board and the published investigation record. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NTSB.

A student and instructor pilot (CFI) were landing on runway 18 in wind that was from 180 degrees at 10 knots. The airplane ground looped during the landing, while the student pilot was operating the controls. An examination of the airplane after the accident revealed the tailwheel had slipped off its rim. The flight instructor believed that this was the initiating event for the ground loop. However, an inspection of the airplane did not reveal whether this was an initiating event or a result of the ground loop.

NTSB Probable Cause

loss of aircraft control for an undetermined reason.

Full Narrative

On August 16, 1995, at 1355 central daylight time, an Aeronca 7AC, N83564, ground looped while landing on runway 18 at the Mount Vernon Municipal Airport, Mount Vernon, Missouri. The 14 CFR Part 91 instructional flight was operating in visual meteorological conditions without a flight plan. The certificated flight instructor (CFI) and the student pilot were not injured. The airplane was substantially damaged. The flight originated from Bolivar, Missouri, at 1255 cdt. The CFI stated the tailwheel spun off the wheel rim and lodged itself below the tailwheel hardware. On touchdown the airplane ground looped. According to the Federal Aviation Administration Inspectors who inspected the airplane after the accident, the tailwheel tire was slipped off the rim. However, it was not possible to determine if this was an initiating event of the ground loop or as a result of the ground loop.
