The pilot requested a full stop landing on the last quarter of the 10,000-foot runway. As the pilot applied braking after the landing, the airplane veered off the left side of the runway. As the airplane skidded along the runway, the right landing gear collapsed. No mechanical problem with the airplane was reported by the pilot, and examination of the airplane failed to disclose a mechanical problem.

Full Narrative

On February 22, 1996, at 1745 central standard time, a Piper PA-28R-200, N2590Q, right main landing gear collapsed during rollout from a landing on runway 23 at the Birmingham Municipal Airport in Birmingham, Alabama. The personal flight operated under the provisions of Title 14 CFR Part 91 with no flight plan filed. Visual weather conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The airplane sustained substantial damage, and the commercial pilot was not injured. The flight departed Pell City, Alabama, at 1725. The pilot had requested to touchdown on the last quarter of the 10,000 foot concrete runway. As the pilot applied braking following the touchdown, the airplane veered left of the runway centerline. He then applied heavy breaking to stop the airplane. During the heavy braking phase, the airplane turned to the left, and the right main landing gear collapsed. Examination of the airplane failed to disclose a mechanical problem, nor did the pilot report a mechanical problem with the airplane.
