Aviation safety reports, made easier to study

NTSB Reports is an independent research and search tool for public aviation accident and incident records. It brings NTSB aviation reports, structured fields, docket files, extracted figures, photos, videos, and update history into one searchable interface.

The goal is practical safety education: make it faster to find relevant investigations, compare similar events, review factual records, and understand the evidence behind probable-cause and preliminary reports.

The investigative work and source records belong to the National Transportation Safety Board and the published investigation record. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NTSB.

THE SOLO STUDENT PILOT LOST CONTROL OF A CONVENTIONAL WHEELED AIRPLANE DURING A TOUCH AND GO PRACTICE LANDING, AND GROUND LOOPED. ON THE SAME DAY HE HAD BEEN PRACTICING LANDINGS IN A TRICYCLE WHEELED AIRPLANE. THE STUDENT HAD 28 HOURS TOTAL PILOT TIME.

NTSB Probable Cause

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL. A FACTOR TO THE ACCIDENT WAS THE PILOT'S LACK OF TOTAL EXPERIENCE.

Full Narrative

On June 28, 1993, at 1846 Alaska daylight time, a wheeled equipped Cessna 140 airplane, N4214N, owned and operated by a student pilot, ground-looped on a touch and go landing at Juneau, Alaska. The solo pilot was conducting practice landings for instructional purposes under 14 CFR Part 91 in visual meteorological conditions. No flight plan was filed. The pilot was not injured, however the aircraft sustained substantial damage. The student pilot told the NTSB that he had made an approach at 60 knots, and during a three point landing, "got into a bounce and couldn't control it." He said that he had 24 hours of total pilot time and that earlier that morning he had practiced landings in a tricycle gear Cessna 150 airplane. The FAA told the NTSB that upon examination of the student's log book, that "he (the student pilot) did not have a proper endorsement in his log book to practice touch and go landings."
