THE PILOT DECIDED TO LAND ON A ROAD WHEN OUTSIDE VISUAL REFERENCES DIMINISHED. DURING THE LANDING ROLL THE AIRPLANE STRUCK A ROAD SIGN AND SPUN OUT OF CONTROL.

THE PILOT'S CONTINUED FLIGHT INTO ADVERSE WEATHER. FACTORS WERE WEATHER CONDITIONS AND COLLISION WITH A SIGN.

Full Narrative

On December 19, 1993, at 1423 central standard time, a Boeing A75N1, N55133, was substantially damaged during a precautionary landing near Madisonville, Texas, due to deteriorating weather conditions. The airline transport rated pilot was not injured. Instrument meteorological conditions existed throughout the area. The pilot reported, during an interview conducted by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector, that he encountered low ceilings and attempted to land on a road. During the landing the aircraft struck a roadside marker and spun around, collapsing a landing gear and damaging the wing spar.
