Aviation safety reports, made easier to study

NTSB Reports is an independent research and search tool for public aviation accident and incident records. It brings NTSB aviation reports, structured fields, docket files, extracted figures, photos, videos, and update history into one searchable interface.

The goal is practical safety education: make it faster to find relevant investigations, compare similar events, review factual records, and understand the evidence behind probable-cause and preliminary reports.

The investigative work and source records belong to the National Transportation Safety Board and the published investigation record. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NTSB.

The certificated private pilot was landing a tundra tire equipped Piper PA-18 airplane on a dry, paved runway, which required a correction for a left crosswind. After touchdown, during the landing roll, the airplane veered to the left. The pilot applied right rudder and right brake to correct the veer. The airplane pivoted 180 degrees to the right, and the right wing struck the runway. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the right wing leading edge, and right wing main spar.

NTSB Probable Cause

The pilot's inadequate compensation for wind conditions. Factors associated with the accident were a crosswind, and an inadvertent ground loop/swerve.

Full Narrative

On June 10, 2000, about 2000 Alaska daylight time, a tundra tire equipped Piper PA-18 airplane, N8162C, sustained substantial damage while landing on a dry, paved runway, at the Kodiak Airport, Kodiak, Alaska. The airplane was being operated as a visual flight rules (VFR) personal flight under Title 14, CFR Part 91, when the accident occurred. The solo certificated private pilot was not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed. The flight originated about 1910, from the Kodiak Municipal Airport. During a telephone conversation with the National Transportation Safety Board investigator-in-charge on June 11, the pilot reported that he was landing on runway 18, which required a correction for a left crosswind. He said that during the landing roll, the airplane veered to the left. He applied right rudder and right brake to correct the veer. The airplane pivoted 180 degrees to the right, and the right wing struck the runway. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the right wing leading edge, and right wing main spar.
