About

Aviation safety reports, made easier to study

NTSB Reports is an independent research and search tool for public aviation accident and incident records. It brings NTSB aviation reports, structured fields, docket files, extracted figures, photos, videos, and update history into one searchable interface.

The goal is practical safety education: make it faster to find relevant investigations, compare similar events, review factual records, and understand the evidence behind probable-cause and preliminary reports.

The investigative work and source records belong to the National Transportation Safety Board and the published investigation record. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NTSB.

THE PLT STATED THAT WHEN HE CONTACTED UNICOM, HE HEARD RUNWAY 32 WAS THE ACTIVE. BUT SINCE IT DOES NOT EXIST HE INTERPRETED THE ACTIVE AS RWY 22. AFTER TOUCHDOWN WITH A RIGHT QUARTERING TAILWIND, THE ACFT BOUNCED, DRIFTED OFF THE RWY, FLEW OVER A DITCH, STALLED, THEN TOUCHED DOWN IN SAND AND NOSED OVER. THE UNICOM OPERATOR STATED THAT HE HEARD THE PILOT CALL FOR A RUNWAY ADVISORY, BUT BEFORE HE COULD ISSUE AN ADVISORY THE PILOT RESPONDED 'UNDERSTAND 22 ZEPHYRHILLS.' THE OPERATOR THEN ADVISED THAT THE WINDS WERE FAVORING RUNWAY 36, BUT THERE WAS NO RESPONSE FROM THE PILOT. THE PILOT ALSO STATED HE DID NOT FLY OVER THE FIELD TO OBSERVE THE WINDSOCK.

NTSB Probable Cause

THE STUDENT PILOT NOT OBTAINING THE CURRENT WIND INFORMATION WHICH RESULTED IN SELECTING THE WRONG RUNWAY FOR LANDING; IMPROPER RECOVERY FROM A BOUNCED LANDING. CONTRIBUTING FACTOR(S) WAS: THE STUDENT PILOT'S LACK OF EXPERIENCE AND THE TAILWIND CONDITIONS.
