About

Aviation safety reports, made easier to study

NTSB Reports is an independent research and search tool for public aviation accident and incident records. It brings NTSB aviation reports, structured fields, docket files, extracted figures, photos, videos, and update history into one searchable interface.

The goal is practical safety education: make it faster to find relevant investigations, compare similar events, review factual records, and understand the evidence behind probable-cause and preliminary reports.

The investigative work and source records belong to the National Transportation Safety Board and the published investigation record. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NTSB.

The student pilot was practicing solo takeoffs and landings to Runway 03. During one of the landings, in the flare, the airplane 'ballooned'. The student pilot failed to apply corrective action, and the nose gear struck the runway. The airplane then began to 'porpoise,' and travel off the left side of the runway. The nose gear dug into grass, and the airplane came to rest inverted. The reported winds at the airport, about the time of the accident, were from 090 degrees at 6 knots.

NTSB Probable Cause

The student pilot's inadequate recovery from a bounced landing.

Full Narrative

On December 9, 2000, about 1300 Eastern Standard Time, a Cessna 172M, N80854, was substantially damaged while landing at the Montgomery County Airport (IOB), Mount Sterling, Kentucky. The certificated student pilot received minor injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed for the local instructional flight conducted under 14 CFR Part 91. The student pilot departed IOB solo about 1230, to practice takeoffs and landings. The student pilot stated that while landing on Runway 03, in the flare, "...the plane ballooned and I did not correct for it." He added that the nose gear struck the runway, and the airplane "porpoised." The airplane then traveled off the left side of the runway. The nose gear dug into the grass, and the airplane came to rest inverted. The student pilot reported that he had approximately 56 hours of total flight experience; of which, about 20 hours were solo experience.
