On February 10, 2010 at approximately 0542 UTC, an ItAli Airlines MD-82 at liftoff from runway 35R in Malpesa, experienced right engine severe damage. The aircraft continued its takeoff climb to a safe altitude, performed a long downwind leg and landed back in Malpesa (LIMC) on the same runway. A runway post flight inspection revealed that part of the engine cowl failed on the runway. Landing was accomplished without further problems. Extensive engine damage was noted. The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the government of Italy.
