About

Aviation safety reports, made easier to study

NTSB Reports is an independent research and search tool for public aviation accident and incident records. It brings NTSB aviation reports, structured fields, docket files, extracted figures, photos, videos, and update history into one searchable interface.

The goal is practical safety education: make it faster to find relevant investigations, compare similar events, review factual records, and understand the evidence behind probable-cause and preliminary reports.

The investigative work and source records belong to the National Transportation Safety Board and the published investigation record. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NTSB.

The pilot was returning from a local flight. Upon landing, the airplane bounced slightly and, after the tailwheel touched down, the airplane veered sharply to the right. The pilot attempted to maintain directional control with left rudder and brake; however, the airplane departed the runway and traveled into the grassy area between the runway and taxiway. As the airplane slowed, it turned sharply to the right, which allowed the right wing to contact the ground. While the pilot thought that the left brake may have failed after touchdown, due to the damage to the landing gear assembly he was not able to perform a brake inspection. A Federal Aviation Administration inspector examined the airplane with no mechanical anomalies identified.

Full Narrative

The pilot was returning from a 1-hour local area flight. Upon landing, the airplane bounced slightly, and after the tail wheel touched down, the airplane veered sharply to the right. The pilot attempted to maintain directional control with left rudder and brake; however, the airplane departed the runway and into the grassy area between the runway and taxiway. As the airplane slowed, it turned sharply to the right, which allowed the right wing to contact the ground. The pilot thought that the left brake may have failed after touchdown, but due to the damage to the landing gear assembly it was not possible to perform a brake inspection. A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector examined the airplane with no mechanical anomalies identified.
