About

Aviation safety reports, made easier to study

NTSB Reports is an independent research and search tool for public aviation accident and incident records. It brings NTSB aviation reports, structured fields, docket files, extracted figures, photos, videos, and update history into one searchable interface.

The goal is practical safety education: make it faster to find relevant investigations, compare similar events, review factual records, and understand the evidence behind probable-cause and preliminary reports.

The investigative work and source records belong to the National Transportation Safety Board and the published investigation record. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NTSB.

The pilot reported that he made a normal landing on the main tires, but when the nosewheel touched down it began to shimmy violently. In response, he pulled back on the control yoke, and the airplane became momentarily airborne, bounced several times, and porpoised down the runway. Postaccident examination of the airplane revealed that the nosewheel tire was crushed and partially attached to the rim; the firewall was wrinkled, the nose landing gear doors were damaged, the nose gear strut was slightly bent, and all three propeller blades were bent aft at the tips. Examination of the runway indicated that there were two propeller strike marks on the runway followed by impact scars from the nosewheel. Just past the nosewheel impact marks, there were four additional propeller strike marks. The pilot stated that he did not observe any abnormality with the nosewheel tire before the flight.

Full Narrative

The pilot reported that he made a normal landing on the main tires, but when the nose wheel set down it began to shimmy violently. In response, he pulled back on the control yoke and the airplane became momentarily airborne before it bounced several times and porpoised down the runway before stopping. Postaccident examination of the airplane revealed the nose wheel tire was crushed and partially attached to the rim; the firewall was wrinkled, the nose gear landing doors were damaged, the nose gear strut was slightly bent, and all three propeller blades were bent aft at the tips. Further examination of the runway indicated there were two propeller strike marks on the runway before the nosewheel struck the ground and left its own impact scars. Just forward of where the nosewheel impact marks began, were four additional propeller strike marks. The pilot stated that he did not observe any abnormality with the nosewheel tire prior to the flight.
