On March 9, 2014, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11F Cargo airplane, registration PH-MCU, operated by Martinair experienced a No. 2 engine, a Pratt & Whitney (P&W) PW4462 turbofan, uncontained engine failure during initial climb after takeoff from Tenerife South Airport (TFS), Tenerife Island, Canary Islands, Spain. An in-flight turnback was performed and an emergency landing was made at Tenerife. The investigation is being conducted by the Comision De Investigacion De Accidentes E Incidentes De Aviacion Civil (CIAIAC) of Spain. The NTSB is participating as the US accredited Representative as the state of manufacture for the engines and the airplane.
