Aviation safety reports, made easier to study

NTSB Reports is an independent research and search tool for public aviation accident and incident records. It brings NTSB aviation reports, structured fields, docket files, extracted figures, photos, videos, and update history into one searchable interface.

The goal is practical safety education: make it faster to find relevant investigations, compare similar events, review factual records, and understand the evidence behind probable-cause and preliminary reports.

The investigative work and source records belong to the National Transportation Safety Board and the published investigation record. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NTSB.

The student pilot was conducting a solo flight during which he was practicing full-stop landings. During his third landing, the nosewheel bounced. He added power to regain control of the airplane, but the airplane veered off the left side of the runway and continued down an embankment before coming to a stop. Examination of the airplane revealed buckling of the firewall and engine mount. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures of the airplane. The accident is consistent with the pilot’s loss of directional control during his attempted recovery from a bounced landing.

NTSB Probable Cause

The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during recovery from a bounced landing, which resulted in a runway excursion.

Full Narrative

On June 6, 2019, at 1102 eastern daylight time, a Piper PA28-161, N9476R, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Westminster, Maryland. The student pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 instructional flight. According to the student pilot, he was practicing full-stop landings when the accident occurred. He said that, during the first full-stop landing, the airplane's nosewheel bounced during the landing roll. The second landing was normal, but, during the third landing, the nosewheel bounced and he "added power" to regain control of the airplane. The airplane veered off the left side of the runway and continued down an embankment before coming to a stop. Examination of the airplane by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector revealed substantial damage to the firewall and engine mount. The pilot reported that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures of the airplane before the accident.
