Aviation safety reports, made easier to study

NTSB Reports is an independent research and search tool for public aviation accident and incident records. It brings NTSB aviation reports, structured fields, docket files, extracted figures, photos, videos, and update history into one searchable interface.

The goal is practical safety education: make it faster to find relevant investigations, compare similar events, review factual records, and understand the evidence behind probable-cause and preliminary reports.

The investigative work and source records belong to the National Transportation Safety Board and the published investigation record. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NTSB.

The pilot returned for landing after dumping the load of fish food into a pond adjacent to the airstrip and landed hard collapsing the right main landing gear. The airplane veered off the right side of the runway collapsing the left main landing gear. The pilot further stated that he landed with a 5 mile per hour left quartering tailwind.

NTSB Probable Cause

Failure of the pilot to maintain the proper descent rate at touchdown resulting in collapse of the right main landing gear.

Full Narrative

On June 10, 1996, about 1245 central daylight time, a Rockwell International S-2R, N8428V, registered to a private owner and leased to the Glen Allan Flying Service, Inc., was substantially damaged on landing at a private airstrip near Wayside, Mississippi. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and no flight plan was filed for the 14 CFR Part 137 aerial application flight. The commercial-rated pilot was not injured. The flight originated about 10 minutes earlier from the private airstrip located near the spray location. The pilot stated that he had previously dumped about 45-50 loads of fish food into a pond. After dumping a load he returned for landing to the north with the wind from the southwest at 5 miles per hour. The right main landing gear collapsed after a hard landing and the airplane veered off the right side of the runway completing a 180-degree turn collapsing the left main landing gear. The airplane came to rest upright.
